Bedroom Design Dilemma:To Canopy or Not to Canopy, That is The Question

Veneer Designs

Canopy beds are definitely hitting a high note this year. We've seen this modern bedroom design trend grow legs and take off. Everyone from Emily Henderson, Amber Interiors, Chango and Co. JDP Interiors, McGee and Co. and of course Veneer Designs is getting into the game with some pretty awe inspiring sleeping structures. Naturally, I'm drawn to the cleaner lines, no fuss, no mess, nothing ornate or with a swirl, nothing draped off the top, just pretty polished metal or wood with clean bedding and a stack of pillows. In this same breath I rant on with this, there is still that minimal part of me that just loves a platform bed or a simple linen slipcovered number. Low clean soft lines, uncomplicated, nothing trying to steal the show kind of sleeping apparatus. But for all intensive purposes of this blog, shedding light on beautiful design and in appreciation for all types of modern bedroom decor, there is still that dramatic side in me that gets me excited about this trend.

The life long Princess Bride dream fantasy played out in your adult bedroom may not work for everyone, and there is definitely a right and wrong way to pull off the modern canopy bed. It kinda all comes down to form and practicality and man do I hate being practical. If you have the square footage and the room height, a stream lined canopy bed is a great way to draw the eye up, to fill all that negative ceiling space and to create a sleeping sanctuary strong enough for a prince and princess alike. Its a beautiful show stopping centerpiece to a bedroom which is why we're drawn to it.  However, it would be a mega faux pas trying to squeeze that massive framed box into a squat space just to take part in a trend. This will only reinforce the feeling that the ceilings are caving in on you. This is not the bed for you. Sorry Sleeping Beauty.

It is however the perfect piece for someone with higher ceilings and a bold spirit. For couples, I like to respect the males perspective, which is why I'm liking the strong metal black framed options and the rustic low wood design. It makes it less fairy tale and more.... cage fighter?? Whatever boys are into, that kinda stuff. You can soften it up with an upholstered headboard or add a little leather for even more masculine ruggedness. If you're on the tall side I would forego the foot board but in general I'm not a big footboard fan. Not because I'm tall, because I'm lazy and it makes it harder to make the bed.

Check out some of my favorite designers showing us just how you pull off a modern canopy bed, followed by a round up of some killer options out there.

Some high, some low options in there. Let the canopy bed the star of your boudoir! Dress it with simple clean bedding, nestle it between two proportionate nightstands and pop a pretty piece of art in it's natural frame for the most perfect sleeping scenario.

ciao for now!
